DVB Native IP (NIP for short) is a software standard released by the DVB Group based on existing DVB standards. It broadcasts streams that would normally come through broadband, but instead is delivered over the air (OTA) and accessible using an NIP STB with WiFi connection.
The DVB-NIP specification marks a significant milestone in media distribution, promising future benefits in personalization, accessibility, and flexible content delivery.
DVB standard for the broadcast of IP content via DVB-S2(X) or DVB-T2:
Two Modes of operation:
Drivers head-end efficiencies for broadcasters as all content is IP.
Enables IP content to be delivered to areas with poor connectivity.
Reduces load on core network for common content, can broadcast to the edge.
Extends the lifetime of existing broadcast infrastructure.
MPE: Legacy MPEG-TS based approach
GSE: New more efficient approach based on General Stream Encapsulation.
Service Discovery
Update/replace open-source components with existing DTVkit components (DSM-CC for MPE based streams)
Implement GSE de-encapsulation with PoC DVB-I and DASH clients
Replace 3rd party components (MABR) with DTVkit implementations
DVBCore has been extended to support service discovery for both MPE and GSE
Files are automatically cleaned from the cached a given capacity/age
Services are added to DVBCore’s database
Files are made available for playback via a simple file read API, which could plug easily into an HTTP server (for example)
Broadcast files are de-encapsulated and cached for playback
