CI Plus

CI Plus is a technical specification that adds further security and features to the proven DVB common interface standard (DVB-CI). This specification allows for the secure delivery of Pay-TV services to CI-Plus compatible devices; this includes set-top-boxes and integrated Digital TV’s (IDTV’s). In March 2018 we upgraded to version 1.4 ECP, this update offers users increased levels of security and robustness for the protection of premium UHD content.  

Overview

Users can take advantage of better levels of support for a range of IPTV and OTT services. Version 1.4 ensured that multi-stream handling was improved. This current specification means users have increased levels of security and encryption for the protection of UHD content. The browser provides support for MHEG-5 applications that are running on a CI Plus host. The CI interconnects a CAM and digital TV receiver to enable any encryption system to be used in the receiver.

CI Plus 2.0

In November 2019 DTVKit integrated CI Plus 2.0. The major advance with the 2.0 release is the migration from PCMCIA based CAMs to a USB form factor. At the time of the inception of the common interface standard, PCMCIA was a widely supported interface and a logical choice. Today though, USB is the standard on most devices, including TVs, yet to support CI Plus, manufacturers still need to include an expensive and physically large PCMCIA connector. The move to USB based CAMs propels CI Plus into the next decade, enabling TV manufacturers to optimise their set designs, and potentially reduce costs. Stepping away from the PCMCIA form factor may also help to drive wider uptake of CI Plus in the STB market where the form factor and cost of PCMCIA was more prohibitive on lower-margin devices.
